I have enjoyed this series prior to this novel, but this one was too ridiculous. I also couldn't get passed how annoying Meg was. I'm done reading these. The plot was poorly developed. I was so tired of hearing about "the notebook that helps me breathe". Meg does no actual work on her own projects in this book because of an injured hand, which was a stupid plot device to put her into a new situation. Just put her in a new situation if that's what you want, have Meg visit her brother and agree to help him out. Much more believable. Then her boyfriend is absent the entire book, filming but they have phone dates AND she flirts with everyone but is offended when they notice. You can't have it both ways. A thoroughly unenjoyable addition to the series.

It has been a good while since the last book and Meg has moved to be closer to Michael. Rob's game has gone huge and is also in the college town. Meg hurt herself in her now cramped studio so because Rob thinks something is off at his company she is filling in as office manager to get things done and do some snooping. Then an annoying prankster is killed at the office and Rob somehow makes himself look like the prime suspect. I had most of the pieces figured out, but enjoyed the story. Being away from home we got only small doses of the crazy relatives and Michael is out town filming a TV show so this is really Meg.
You really want to read the first 3 books in the series before you begin this one. Each of the main characters has a complex, convoluted past that lays the groundwork for why they are the way they are in this series. You will miss out on a lot of the whys and double meanings if you try to jump right to this one.

That being said, it's almost a fish out of water situation here. Meg is on her own in this book - her boyfriend is off in California and only calls in his part of the relationship. Meg is helping her brother with his now successful software company. I'm a programmer and a game reviewer, so I had a blast with this premise. For people who think these characters in the gaming design world are outlandish - really, this is how they are ) I've played midnight role-playing games. I've had pizza and beer brought in at 11pm as yet another build ran over schedule. You have to be insane to survive this sort of lifestyle. Practical jokes and code changes are standard fare. I laughed out loud at many parts - not because I thought it was ridiculous - but because I identified with what was happening.

Meg is injured and is completely away from her normal lifestyle. She's being a secretary here. As is normal for the series, she doesn't detect as much as she falls over clues, and gets many of them wrong. You can complain that this is bothersome - but there are plenty of other books where the super-smart detective sees everything at one glance. Meg's style is quite different. You accept it as part of her bumbling charm.

I actually found myself wondering a few times during the book if I liked this book so much because it had completely removed elements that made the first 3 books unique! A key part of the books so far had been Meg's relationship with her Prince Charming. I found him a bit annoying. I was very happy with his long distance situation - but that doesn't bode well for me for future books ) The same is true for the environment. I loved the software environment, but again this is a one-off. Meg isn't going to be around software developers for all of the books! It was really challenging for me to figure out if the writing style had just matured - so that I liked the "Meg Series" better with this fourth book - or if it was the specific combination of no-boyfriend and great-atmosphere that nailed it for me.

In any case, as usual, I was disappointed by the ending. I just don't like the way any of these books wrap up. You'll have to judge for yourself if you like these style of endings or if they annoy you. Still, if I have a great time through 99% of the book, and this author's particular style of ending doesn't please me, that is still a great ride. If I can laugh out loud the entire time - and read it straight through even though it's 4am and I should be getting to sleep - then that is a book I definitely recommend to others.

Just be sure to read the other earlier books first!
ROFLMAO - Seriously, there are moments in this book that no matter how many times you read it, you will find yourself laughing until you cry. After all, any book that starts with a one winged black buzzard as an office mascot has to be funny. Add in the Andrews's cast of characters plus additional minor players and you are guaranteed a very good read. Well written and entertaining. Meg's brother Rob has overcome the rough start of not being able to find a trustworthy software company to sell his video game to, so he's started his own! In Caerphilly! The small college town that Meg's boyfriend - Michael - works & lives in. Meg has finally relented and moved into "The Cave" with Michael while they try to find a more suitable place to live, which isn't easy with Caerphilly's population growing faster than the available housing market.

When Meg injures her hand due to being stuck in a small studio, she's forced to go work for Mutant Wizards - Rob's company. He needs her sleuthing ability (or just logic & common sense) to figure out what's going wrong inside the company. Instead she finds herself babysitting a one-winged-buzzard, a pack of canines, and the company's juvenile programmers. Shortly after getting started, Meg stumbles upon yet another murder victim.

Can she solve the murder, and the problems within the company?

I was surprised with Donna Andrews' accuracy when it came to the technological details in relation to the development of the video games. Ms. Andrews has proven once again to be a very skilled researcher, which makes me love reading her novels even more. Her portrayal of the programmers, designers, shrinks, and other niche-specific characters was also well researched and accurate. I found myself laughing about how closely they resembled some of my own programming and designing friends!

The plot was also nicely handled, there didn't appear to be any distracting deviations or unnecessary details. As always, the clues are dropped so well that you don't always realize them until the very end! Unfortunately, I didn't like the solution to the crime. There just wasn't enough motive to make it believable.

Regardless of the ending, I'm already looking forward to the next one!
