The Fields of Home Ralph Moody Books
I loved reading this book. For those who marked the book down because of unlikable characters, I will remind you that this is a nonfiction tale, an account of Ralph Moody's life. In a novel the writer can create likable characters. They are drawn from imagination. In this book Ralph Moody described the people and events as they were, or at least how he perceived them to be. I'm sure he wished many times that his grandfather Thomas were easier to get along with and less critical of him, but that wasn't the reality.I found Thomas to be a very interesting man, abrasive, sometimes impossible to get along with, and yet tender with animals. A complicated man with countless layers. I enjoyed Levi's analysis of his father's feelings and what made him behave the way he did. How insightful Levi was to have been able to explain his cantankerous father to Ralph in a way that he could not only understand, but also enabled him to empathize with his old grandfather's mixed emotions, a war being waged within his heart. Millie was also a pleasure to read about, in my opinion. Again, she was a real person with a past that shaped her into the woman she became, loyal to cranky old Thomas almost to a fault, and yet spunky enough to say she'd had enough and leave the farm.
This is a heart-touching and enriching book to read. Coming to know these people through Ralph's memories of them was a pleasurable experience for me.

The Fields of Home Ralph Moody Books Reviews
Having read the first several volumes of Ralph Moody's works, I didn't think they could get any "better" than they already were. "Fields of Home" is better though, although perhaps I feel that way because it struck a chord with me in where I live, in the cold northernmost part of New York State. The descriptions of the farming and other activities resonated with stories of my grandparents, my parents and my childhood experiences. The characters seem to be people I know. Awesome book in a great series of books that are appropriate for all ages (my parents love them too).
These are excellent stories chronicling early 1900's American life in the mid west from the perspective of a young boy. Exemplifies excellent work ethics, definitely gives the reader higher standards to work toward. Highlights the value of freedom to achieve, or fail. Great life lessons communicated well.
One of a series of eight books by Ralph Moody tells a tale of an enterprising young man's coming of age in the 1920's Colorado area. Its direct and forthright language is a pleasure to read. I looked forward each morning and night to reading each page of all eight volumes.
Our family has thoroughly enjoyed this series, and I would give all the others five stars. This is our least favorite so far, and we are dragging our feet about finishing this one, while the others we could not get enough of. But, of course if you are reading the series you will probably read the book anyway, just like us. I still have hope for the next one!
The story was very reminiscent of my youth, late 40s and early 50s, when I would spend most of the summer on my grandfather's dairy farm in west central Wisconsin I recognized all of the farm implement terms that were mentioned in the story. My grandfather insisted on working with horses but bought 2 tractors to help the hired help and his son's in law expedite the work. I had experiences with machinery that soon became obsolete with the introduction of combines. Experience that people just a few years younger than me cannot relate to. I really enjoy Ralph Moody's writing style and the stories of his youth. I've read several of his book and will continue to enjoy them.
I read this in 1961 and it became one of my favorite books. I never knew it was part of a whole series, just appreciated it for the amazing glimpse into a rural New England past that was light-years different from my Big City ghetto upbringing. Years went past and I somehow lost my copy, yet I never forgot the characters and the vivid anecdotes Ralph Moody related. I finally checked and wow, it was still in print and going strong. I ordered it, re-read it, and yes - it's as wonderful now as it was to me 50 yrs ago.
I loved reading the reviews here as well - got to learn more about the Moody family and it was all fascinating. Thanks, and readers!
This is the third book I have read in Ralph Moody's series, and I. Love. It.
I actually had this book for a school assignment and when we were supposed to read to about chapter 13, but I read to chapter 34. This book shows how to get through hard times without having to hate it. Highly recommend for those who dream of living out on a ranch with a big chunk of land to call their own.
