This story is about friendship, family ties and first love and in one way, it reminded me of If I Stay by Gail Forman in that one of the girls (Emily) is in a coma and we see her and Robin's life through Robin's memories. Unlike If I stay, this story is the friendship of two best friends and the consequences of being without each other for months.

Robin and Emily fell from a 30 feet of off a maintenance ladder at a theme park. Robin walked away from the hospital, but Emily hasn't awakened from her coma. Emily is the more forceful personality of the two, and Robin can't find her place without her. Robin is also suffering from her brain injury which means she has some amnesia and difficulty doing mundane things like speaking correctly all the time. Both Robin and Emily have difficult home situations that help the reader to understand why they are having such a hard time and to feel compassion for them.

Reno used to be Robin's best friend, but when they entered the awkward teenage years, it ended. After the accident, Reno re-enters Robin's life and she re-evaluates her feelings for him and what she means to her life. Reno helps, protects, listens and supports her and the reader can't help but love him.

This is a hard story to read since the girls are so traumatized by their parent's actions and you want to just shake their parents. I don't know what Robin would have done if not for Reno when Emily wouldn't wake up. I don't think she would have healed or been able to move on since the kids at her school were so mean to her. The story is definitely a commentary on where children are today and the effect of home life and school life on who they become.

There were parts of this story that were a little too slow, but by the time I came to the ending, I was glad I had persevered and that it was a free download. If you liked Blue by Lou Aronica, or Forget You by Jennifer Echols than you may like this short story

Notes to Self eBook Laura Schaefer Reviews

I was a bit surprised at how much I liked this book. I've had it on my for a very long time (maybe through an recommendation or a deep discount offer; maybe even free but I can't remember) but forgot about it. When I finally started reading it, I got swept up into the story. Being a mom of a teenage daughter, I enjoy reading the Young Adult books that either my daughter reads or that she may want to read (she hasn't read this but I will recommend to her.) I was a little confused by one part toward the end...I thought there was going to be a big a-ha twist (I don't want to spoil it though) and was confused by it not going anywhere. It was just a strange part that intrigued me at first and then simply confused me when it wasn't clarified later or really addressed. And I was a little disappointed by the ending as I wanted just a tiny bit more of a conclusion. One tidbit about the light in the room made me think one way about what was about to happen, but then another observation in the very last sentence made me think of a different conclusion. (A little cryptic I know but I don't want to spoil anything.) But overall, I really enjoyed the story and could easily see this as a hit movie.
I have so many unread books on my that I put myself on a buying-freeze and started reading some freebies I've had for awhile. This one has been on my for nearly two years. I expected to read a little and give up on it like I do with most freebies, and I did skim a little in the beginning because it was kind of flat and generic. But when I got further into it I found myself reading every word and highlighting dozens of passages. WOW! The writing it spot-on. It's the kind of prose that makes me think this review will only look juvenile in comparison. There isn't anything I can say to do it justice, but it was a great read about an average teenager trying to figure out her place in the world. Here's some of my favorite highlights

If guilt was an object, I knew it was a stone that sat right on you, pinning you down, showing no mercy.

I don't believe everything happens for a reason. But I still search for reasons anyway. It's like I don't want to admit that everything really is totally random.

Maybe we all made mistakes so it was easier to forgive other people's.

I didn't feel guilty anymore. I almost felt like I was living for both of us now, like I had to have a life that was twice as big. If Emily had to be asleep, I had to be awake. For real awake. Like this.

If you like wholesome, YA, coming-of-age types of stories, with no sex and barely any swearing, I think you'll like this one a lot. I really feel like this book could be huge with a better cover and some promotion. It feels like a waste to cover something so incredible with such a bland cover.
