Snapper Roddy Doyle Books

A heart-warming tale of out-or-work friends in the Dublin of the '80s and their dream of owning a chip van, which is first realised and then ... well, I won't spoil the story. The characters are individual and unforgettable, from the soft-hearted Jimmy Sr, who is unable to articulate his more sensitive feelings, to his indomitable wife Veronica, who manages to study for and pass the Leaving Cert. amidst a chaos of children, a too-small house, a moping unemployed husband and his assorted friends, including the ever-optimistic Bimbo. For some reason, Roddy Doyle chooses not to use quotation marks for the words spoken by his characters, preferring a dash at the beginning of each speech, which is irritating. Still, his ear for North Dublin city patois is unerring and very funny. The story moves at snail's pace, but it is an entertaining snail. Warning: The F word appears innumerable times.

Snapper Roddy Doyle Books Reviews

if you love the movie, you'll enjoy the book but the writing style is a bit odd
So funny typical Dublin humour just brilliant typical roddy Doyle small turkey but tus a big baby ha ha ha
I just loved this book! The basic story is so beautifully told - Roddy Doyle knows exactly where he's coming from and puts over the Rabbitte family's way of life so well. All you need in a social drama is there - humour, sadness and reality are all expertly drawn in just the right places. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in humorous books with a social touch.

Well worth 4 stars!
Fun, a bit sad and very likeable and real characters. A bit tough to understand as the Irish accent is really evident but makes it much more authentic (just get into it and have fun)!
The plot of the story is interesting enough, about a man on the dole looking for some way to improve his life. The story has its moments. The writing style is quite different, and it was difficult to get into the story. It was OK for one time, but it is not an author I will follow on a regular basis.
Because of its exploration of the life inside one working class family, I thought my women's book group would like it. I found the relationship between the dad and his unmarried, pregnant teenage daughter fascinating. The Snapper did create a lively discussion as some had no patience with the raunchy language and all the drinking. Some loved it. Months after I read it the first time, the ways in which family members expressed caring for each other stuck with me, and my husband and I still love calling out the way Dad says this curse word with the stress on first syllable.
This book is funny and down to Earth, just like the movie it inspired. I recommend reading this and others by the author, Roddy Doyle. He talks of Barrytown and his country in a way that makes you feel you know the place and his characters stand the test of time also.
