America is having a one-dimensional discussion on transportation. The central question – how do we get more money to continue with our current approach – fails to adequately explain why our current approach has left us lacking funds in the first place. Political leaders say they want a “world class transportation system” but are not able to explain, in any credible way, how to bring that vision about.
A World Class Transportation System explains why we are stuck, the consensus principles that can unite Americans and the practical – albeit paradigm-shifting – approach that can be used to build the highways, transit systems and local transportation investments we need to be economically competitive.

I am a big fan of the blog, Strong Towns and the brilliant humility in looking at what has become of transportation in this country. In true human nature fashion "If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing." If transportation spending's effect on the economy were similar to that of alcohol on how one feels, we're well past "Happy Buzz" point and entering angry sloppy drunk who gets furious with anyone who'd dare question their need for more. And continuing a very tortured metaphor, it's the younger generations especially Millennials who've been sold this debt driven American Dream idea "Borrow for college, borrow to have a car, borrow to get that suburban house" who are going to be left mopping up the vomit from Suburban development experiment and its far reaching effects on our American democracy experiment.Product details

A World Class Transportation System Transportation Finance for a New Economy eBook Charles Marohn Reviews
This is a long shot but we might as well get started because the current system is dragging us down at a rate we can no longer sustain.
Charles Marohn is a distinguished researcher in the area of urban planning, and writes an excellent blog on the subject. Unfortunately his knowledge and expertise do not shine through on this short publication, which is wordy and offers a train of arguments that is difficult to follow. I hope the author sees fit to compile his extensive experience on the subject matter on a better organized and well edited book.
A short and sweet read. Marohn outlines not just what a new sustainable transportation system should be, but also the ways of long term thinking that support it. A shame we are just now getting to see the negative effects of poor transportation investments on our cities and towns.
Straightforward explanation of why America's transportation infrastructure is dysfunctional without going off-track into party politics. Would recommend this book to anyone interested in reforming suburbia into something more pleasant to human values and economically sustainable.
If you expect a 61 page book that costs $2.99 to solve all your transportation problems, you deserve the system we have today. What this book does do is collect many of the Strong Town ideas that have been presented in one form or another in the past and hopefully start some serious discussion on how to make transportation better than the ever declining and semi-functional system we have today.
While this treatise discusses issues I didn't find direction. We as professionals need to promote multi-modal solutions, yes including the Uber model, but not the execution, in our transportation solutions for small cities and communities. I have been and continue to be a strong advocate for Mobility Management which is coming to the United States from Europe as Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), a shift away from personally owned modes of transportation and towards mobility solutions that are consumed as a service. Not if, but when autonomous cars become common, our whole transportation infrastructure will change - parking lots (why do we need them), garages in homes, 12 lane roadways, taxis (Ubers), freight trucks, etc. I also believe that we need to rethink our infra-transportation structure in the United States. High Speed trains as we are seeing in Europe and China are much more energy efficient, cost effective and people friendly than small commuter jets. So while this raises issue I wanted him to go farther and discuss some futuristic solutions.
It's not a deep-dive into transportation metrics or a long analysis of what we have today. This short ebook sort of assumes that you understand that the current system of transformation funding is not working, and offers a different approach. The book doesn't spend hundreds of pages attempting to convince the reader that the proposal is the best possible proposal ever. The book does a good job of just showing that there are serious and valid ways to look at transportation funding that have nothing whatsoever to do with the current approach. It's meant to shock you into thinking about all of the satisficing that has brought us to the constant state of raising money for road widenings. The author acknowledges that the proposal is out there and that it won't necessarily be adopted anytime soon. But the value of the book lies in seeing a totally different approach and thinking about the problem in new and different ways.
