I’ve been a fan of Elizabeth Bear for a number of years but only now am I able to find more than three or four books by her. Her science fiction is contemporary literature on the primary topics of our age. Those topics are people struggling with the people as everyone struggles with the implications of technological diversity. 20th century science fiction was the literature of people struggling with technology. We’re now struggling with how that technology has changed us and demands that we must change more. Elizabeth Bear works us carefully through that process in numerous possible iterations.Tags : Worldwired (Jenny Casey) [Elizabeth Bear] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>As long as there’s an Earth to defend, Jenny Casey has a job. Worldwired Jenny Casey Elizabeth Bear 9780553587494 Books Reviews
What a relief from wooden, plodding procedurals. Alternates vertiginously between first and third person. Told almost entirely through excruciatingly detailed character interaction. Suspend hasty judgement. Let it grow on you.
A protagonist who isn't perfect. Who isn't young. Who doesn't have a special destiny. But who tries her hardest and sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails.
"Worldwired" goes off, yet again in new direction. The three-part saga that in the author's "Hammered" seemed to be establishing itself as a cyberpunky "band of outlaws up against globalism and the corporations," but turned into an international thriller cum space opera in "Scardown," now adds a first-contact puzzle thread to the proceedings. (And a spectacular scene at the United Nations.)
This time out Jenny Casey takes more of a supporting role (although she gets plenty of action) as Richard, the super-intelligent artificial intelligence, moves front and center here. Certainly, he is the one who keeps all the plotlines together. But Jenny herself gets plenty of chapters in which to tell her part of the story in her wisecracky first-person-present style.
The author brings back the characters who survived the first two tales, and tosses in a few more (she puts a few of the returnees essentially on hold for a while, but do not fret, because she plugs them in when they're needed again), and once again uses her jagged multiple pov style. There's plenty of action here, but you have to resist the temptation to gobble down the pages, because if you do, you won't have the time to relish Ms. Bear's fine-honed prose style.
I hope that Ms. Bear will return to this "universe" she's created, although advertisements at the back of the book would seem to indicate that in her next novel she intends to go in another direction. No matter. I'll travel that road with her.
In less than 50 years technology could bring us to the brink of destruction and beyond to a beautiful and scary new world. A world where we can communicate with other species and, finally, even begin to break down the differences that divide us. Not without a lot of sacrifice.
Third book actually got better. Very few series that that can be said about. Especially the ones that start as strongly as this one did.
Finally, someone who has some clues about plausible aliens. Very few of those around the hallways of science fiction. Way too much work.
I’m hooked. Got this story in a group, and have already bought the others in the trilogy. For this story, however, what I enjoyed was the creativity of aliens and the positive take on Artificial Intelligence—with side trips to potential downsides.
3rd in a series - interesting plot development
2nd and 3rd books lead into realms not expected - end of 3rd seemed like sort of a rush to wind up everything in the last few pages -
almost enough there to warrant a 4th in the series rather than cram everything into a summation
