These are stories about six separate and interesting events in American history. They are not major events, but they certainly fill in some of the cracks and give us a different perspective on the history taught in American schools.

Each chapter starts out with a timeline relevant to the story and helps place story in perspective; each chapter ends with a section called "Aftermath" which summarizes the consequences of the events in the chapter.

"Isabella's Pigs" tell us a little about Columbus's expedition and a lot about related Spanish activity in the New World.

"Hannah's Escape" is the story of Hannah Dustin (probably unfamiliar to most people outside New England) and more about Anne Hutchinson and the Pequot war.

"Washington's Confession" gives an interesting view of George Washington as a young officer and a possible war crime he may have committed as well as his later role in the American Revolution.

"Warren's Toga" has some interesting information about Joseph Warren and some of the personalities at the beginning of the American Revolution. Some of it is anecdotal but fascinating.

"Arnold's Boot" has good, solid biographical information on Benedict Arnold. You may not think the same of Arnold after you read this chapter.

"Lafayette's Sword" is concerned with Shay's Rebellion and its aftermath and describes the disaffection Americans had with the new government after the Revolution (and with good reason).

All in all, a nice read but certainly nothing that will be earth shaking. I think it might open some people's eyes (especially the chapter on Benedict Arnold) and it certainly will round out a lot of things that you think you knew about early American history.

My husband could not put this book down! Very interesting and informative! American history he had never read before or knew existed and my husband is a retired educational administer and teacher. He has taught several history classes in the past. Great read!
Nice addition to Don't Know Much About History book. Liked the earlier period information that included the rulers of England, France, and Spain and how their European wars affected The new world. Also was intrigued with the details about Benedict Arnold.p
The first two stories in this book were quite interesting, but as the chapters went on, I found that I knew more about "America's hidden history" than perhaps the author expected. It's well worth reading, but don't hold out false hopes that the whole book is going to be eye-opening. It isn't.
I started this book a few times before I finished it. This does not have the same everyman appeal as some of Mr. Davis's earlier works and it didn't leap off the page for me in the same way as "Don't Know Much About History" or "Don't Know Much About The Bible." I scolded myself a few times however, and eventually worked up the stamina to lose myself in the book. This may require you to do the same, but as always, the payoff is a new respect for reality verses the fantasy of History written by the winners!
This book made the Founding Fathers into the normal men that they were. They had a hard time paying their bills. Between taxes and keeping their businesses going, they had a hard time not going to debtors' prison. The harsh winters and some of the Indians didn't help either.
well written. Told tales I had not heard in several instances. With the lion's share of focus on the times around the beginning of this Nation, ti is good background reading for anyone interested in the assertions and stories floating about today in political discussions.
American History has been rewritten as propaganda. This book is refreshing and interesting to read. It explores history that is ignored or suppressed.
Jim Lewis was vp candidate for the Libertarian Party in 1984. Jim worked for a bookbinding company. They restored old books. If that seems strange, remember, the books had good information. But, it would have been ridiculously expensive - with the technology available in 1900's - to preserve the information any other way than repairing the book.
One of Jim's favorite past times was finding old history books (sometimes they were current event books when written) to explore how the events reported changed over the years.
There's an appropriate song title, "History Ain't What It Used To Be." If you want to explore a U.S. History that ain't what it is today, you will enjoy this book. Jim cowrote "Liberty Reclaimed" by James Lewis (Author), Jim Perron (Author).
